The Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation, in collaboration with the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, is pleased to invite you to its next yearly conference on Wednesday 21 March 2012 at 18:00. Mr. Cornelio Sommaruga, former President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, will share his precious experience on the theme of "Globalization of responsibilities: the role of civil society in conflict prevention."
Mr. Cornelio Sommaruga was born in Rome in 1932. Swiss citizen from Lugano (Ticino), he obtained his doctorate in law at the University of Zürich in 1957. He joined the Swiss Confederation in 1960 until 1973 where he held various diplomatic posts in the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. Appointed Deputy Secretary General of EFTA (European Free Trade Association) in Geneva in 1973, he joined three years later the Federal Office for Foreign Economic Affairs in Bern. Successively ambassador and delegate for trade agreements, he became, in 1984, Secretary of State for Foreign Economic Affairs. In 1986, the Assembly of the International Committee of the Red Cross elected him member of the ICRC. Mr. Sommaruga assumed the presidency of the Committee from 7 May 1987 to 31 December 1999, when he left the ICRC. Several universities have honored Mr. Sommaruga an honorary doctorate.
